LETTERMAN TOP 10 DELIVERED BY STRIKING WRITERS

NEW YORK - Striking television writers delivered David Letterman's Top 10 list, "Demands of the Striking Writers," on his show Wednesday:

10. "Complimentary tote bag with next insulting contract offer" — Tim Carvell, from "The Daily Show."

9. "No rollbacks in health benefits, so I can treat the hypothermia I caught on the picket lines" — Laura Krafft, from "The Colbert Report."

8. "Full salary and benefits for my imaginary writing partner, Lester" — Melissa Salmons, writer for daytime TV.

7. "Members of the AMPTP must explain what the hell AMPTP stands for" — Warren Leight, writer for "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."

6. "No disciplinary action taken against any writer caught having inappropriate relationship with a copier" — Jay Katsir, from "The Colbert Report."

5. "I'd like a date with a woman" — Steve Bodow, from "The Daily Show."

4. "Hazard pay for breaking up fights on `The View'" — from writer and director Nora Ephron.

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that David Letterman will pay the entire staff of "the Late Show" with his own money while the show is shut down during the writers strike. CBS stopped paying the staff when the show halted production last week. NBC is trying the same tactic to put pressure on the writers, and has threatened to lay off the entire staff of "the Tonight Show" unless the writers come back to work. Deadline says Letterman has committed to pay them at least through the end of the year.

"Dave's not doing this to get good press, which is why it hasn't been reported for almost two days," a source tells me. "This is really significant because, as opposed to all of the other shows, this money comes out of Dave's own pocket."

THE UNCOOLNESS OF FOX TV AND RUPERT MURDOCH

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox's animated comedy "Family Guy" will continue with original episodes done without the participation of creator/executive producer Seth MacFarlane, sources said.

The hit show's last episode that was finished before the writers strike aired Sunday. Fox and producing studio 20th Century Fox TV had been faced with the option of contining the show without MacFarlane, who has been on the picket lines, or stop production and go to repeats. "Family Guy" originally was scheduled to air fresh episodes through the end of the November sweep.

After the rally at Fox on Friday, where he was one of the speakers, MacFarlane said the studio could proceed with completing new episodes but that he had advised them against it.

"I hope they don't do it," he said.

20th TV had no comment on the matter Tuesday but confirmed that it remains in production on new episodes.

As of Tuesday night, the first episode finished without MacFarlane's blessing had been delivered to Fox.

Sources said that episode is one of three very close to completion, with others in various stages of production.
